" I made this plastic surgery cirriculum-mapped ANKI deck after failing the written board exams. Painful to write but it is the truth of the matter. Objectively, my ability to recall the huge volume of niche and very specific information, despite reading all the key texts (Janis' Essentials In Plastic Surgery and its companion question book, Key Notes In Plastic Surgery and being a 'present' trainee) was not working. My first thought was '' the definition of madness is doing the same thing twice expecting a diffeent result'', so I made a change
and this was the approach that made me pass this huge hurdle: 
 
1. I stuck to 1 landmark reference textbook - keep it simple, pick the one that works best for you 
 
2. If i could remember song lyrics to all these songs on my way to work and at the gym etc,  I probably would fair well listening to the reference information on my travels. Just the cold hard facts succinctly delivered, topic by topic.

3. You need to remember details; from phases of wound healing, genes causing craniosynostosis to embryology timelines, dermal substitute components and anatomical landmarks for neck dissections. This will be tested directly and indirectly in the context of clinical scenarios. These exams are long, and specific, chances are, you will not get away with guessing answers. So I made notes based on the reference text, updated it with current guidelines and converted it into a cirriculum mapped ANKI deck. 7000 questions arranged by topic!
 
I used the spaced repetition quite lliterally to drum it into memory. Simply put - if I got it wrong - I made it come up in afew minutes again. Initially, I did the anki topic based on what I read that day. Closer to the exam I focused on high yield topics.
 
This approach lifted me from a failing score of 151 (pass mark 158) to 183 (pass mark 154) with an average score by topic 80.5. If you want to increase your chances of passing, take no shortcuts, study topics as you rotate through the different sub-speciality firms and closer to the exam, give it at least 4-6 months of intense study.
