" I realised the power of ANKI deck after failing the written exams for the FRCS. Painful to write but it is the truth of the matter. Objectively, my ability to recall the huge volume of niche and very specific information, despite reading all the key texts. My first thought was '' the definition of madness is doing the same thing twice expecting a diffeent result'', so I made a change
and this was the approach that made me pass this huge hurdle:
1. I stuck to 1 landmark reference textbook - keep it simple, pick the one that works best for you
2. If i could remember song lyrics to all these songs on my way to work and at the gym etc, I probably would fair well listening to the reference information on my travels. Just the cold hard facts succinctly delivered, topic by topic.
So I made two podcasts, one for the FRCS and the other for The MRCS - available FOR FREE on spotify/Apple and wherever else you listen to podcasts. Search: The MRCS Accelerator (by MedSync)
3. You need to remember details; from anatomy, to physiology, to underlying cellular changes to the triad of symptoms associated with a specific disease, in every speciality. This will be tested directly and indirectly in the context of clinical scenarios. These exams are long, and specific, chances are, you will not get away with guessing answers. This deck is mapped to the cirriculum but even more importantly there is heavy attention paid to popular topics in the MRCS. This is not a new exam, common things are still common.
Spaced repetition quite lliterally will drum it into memory. Simply put - if I got it wrong - make it come up in afew minutes again. Initially, I did the anki topic based on what I read that day. Closer to the exam I focused on high yield frequently occuring topics.
This approach lifted me from a failing score of 151 (pass mark 158) to 183 (pass mark 154) with an average score by topic 80.5 in the FRCS written exam. Do't just take my word for it. A junior friend struggling with the MRCS used the deck after failing his first attempt and he passed with ease.
There is no secret to passing the exam. Put in the time and use this resource in its entirety, especially if you are short on time.
I wish you the best with your training and exam preparation, I hope you find these resources as useful as I did and they save you time (and the pain of failing)''
